Original review

[…] The Concerto for bass clarinet accompanied by 10 solo instruments from 1931 belongs to the composer's earlier works, and is a generally light, tuneful work, folksy in feel if not in content (the version we get here is the composer's reconstruction, written from memory in 1943 after the original manuscript had been described). The bass clarinet is not a common solo instrument, but Schelb does wonders with it; the solo lines are expressive, and the textures imaginative (from the eerie to the warmly wistful). The opening movement is quirky and humorous, but ambivalent; the second movement gentle and flowing with a gothique-style cadenza, and the finale is buoyant, somewhat Stravinskian, and very compelling. Overall, while perhaps not a masterpiece this is an enjoyable work. […]
